The DeKalb County Jail Facility

The DeKalb County Jail is operated by the Sheriff's Office and holds pretrial and short-term sentenced inmates. Court holding and transport areas at the courthouse complex are separate from the main detention facility.

The Sheriff's Office is led by Sheriff Melody M. Maddox. The jail is several miles from the downtown Decatur courthouse, so a courthouse address and a jail address are not interchangeable.

The DeKalb County Booking Process

An arrested person is transported to the jail, identified, searched, and processed. Property is inventoried. A booking photo and biometric data are taken. Charges and any warrants are entered into the jail record. Medical and classification screening occurs. The defendant is housed in a unit or released after bond posting or court order. First appearance through Magistrate Court usually follows within a statutory time limit.

Bond may be cash, surety, property, recognizance, or no bond, depending on the charge and any court order. A bond may be blocked by a probation hold, an out-of-county warrant, a federal hold, or an immigration detainer. The Sheriff's Office does not set bond. Magistrate, State, or Superior Court judges set the initial bond.

Bond and Release From the DeKalb County Jail

Release from DeKalb jail custody can happen after bond posting, dismissal, sentence completion, transfer to another jurisdiction, or a court order. The release date in the jail portal reflects release from that specific jailing event. The defendant may still be in custody on a different hold, transferred to the Georgia Department of Corrections, or held by federal authorities.

The Tyler View Jailing detail page exposes the precise release date and time when known. For current custody verification, the Tyler portal is the right tool. For state prison custody, see the released inmates page and the Georgia Department of Corrections offender query. For federal custody, the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator is the right tool.

The sample View Jailing detail page shows the layout for an individual jailing record.

The detail page is the deepest public view of a single DeKalb jailing event. Charges, bond type, fine, and disposition fields all appear here when present.

Charges and Mugshot Flags in the Jail Portal

Each jailing record can carry multiple charges. The charge fields include warrant number, issuing authority, disposition, arresting agency, bond type, fine, costs, paid amount, charge description, total cost, offense date, and arrest date. Some fields may be null on a given record.

The portal exposes mugshot flags for front, left, and right profile images. A flag of "false" means the portal does not have that image type for that record. A flag of "true" surfaces a mugshot view. Some older records carry no mugshot images. A jail record carrying no mugshot does not mean the booking did not happen.

Searching for a Just-Booked DeKalb Inmate

A new booking may take several hours to appear in the public portal. Processing time depends on intake volume, classification, and medical screening. Family members searching for a recently arrested person should check the jail portal at intervals, but the absence of an online record does not mean the person is not in custody.

For urgent verification, the jail can be contacted through the Sheriff's Office. Attorneys may also confirm custody through professional channels. Bond posting depends on the charge, court order, and jail procedures. A criminal defense attorney is the right next step if liberty, immigration, or bond rules are at stake.

Visitation at the DeKalb County Jail

The Sheriff's visitation page at dekalbsheriff.org/visitation is the official source for current scheduling, visitor ID requirements, the registration or scheduling vendor, prohibited conduct, dress code, minors, and remote or on-site visiting. Jail schedules change due to staffing, housing unit, classification, lockdowns, holidays, and vendor changes. Visitors should confirm before traveling.

DeKalb County Inmate Mail Rules

The Sheriff's inmate mail page covers the current rules and mail vendor. Jail mail policies commonly ban contraband, cash, stamps, stickers, Polaroid photos, explicit material, coded messages, and third-party packages unless an approved vendor is used. Many jails also use scan-and-deliver or vendor mail processing, where physical mail is converted to a digital format and the original is not delivered.

Family members and attorneys should confirm current addresses and vendor instructions on the Sheriff's site before sending mail. A misaddressed envelope can be returned, redirected to the vendor, or rejected. Attorney-client mail follows separate handling rules.

Commissary and Money Deposits

The Sheriff's commissary page covers the current vendor and deposit options. Common options include online deposit, kiosk, phone, and approved retailers. Exact vendor names and fees must come from the Sheriff's page because vendor relationships change. Money deposits affect commissary purchases but do not automatically pay court fines, restitution, or bond unless the jail or court accepts that channel for that purpose.

Phone calls and tablets are vendor-controlled. The inmate generally cannot receive incoming calls. Family should review the vendor account rules, per-minute prices, refund policy, and block settings. Attorney calls and visits should be arranged through professional channels because routine inmate calls are commonly recorded.

Federal and State Inmate Locators for DeKalb Residents

The DeKalb jail is not the only custody system a person may sit in. The Georgia Department of Corrections offender query at gdc.georgia.gov covers sentenced state prisoners. The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator at bop.gov/inmateloc covers federal inmates and former federal inmates. The VINELink portal at vinelink.com covers victim notification and custody-status searches across Georgia agencies. The Georgia sex offender registry at services.georgia.gov covers post-release registration where required.

Common Mistakes Searching the DeKalb Jail Portal

The Tyler jail search is straightforward, but several user errors come up often.

  • Searching for a person who was just arrested before the booking finishes processing.
  • Treating a release date as confirmation that the person went home, when a transfer or hold applied.
  • Searching only the legal name when a maiden name or alias is on the record.
  • Confusing the courthouse address in downtown Decatur with the jail address on Memorial Drive.
  • Assuming a jail charge description matches the formal court accusation or indictment.
  • Stopping at the first matching name. Common surnames return many results.
  • Treating jail data as proof of guilt. A booking is not a conviction.
